JOB VACANCY DIRECTOR FOR MUST INSTITUTE FOR INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND
INNOVATION (MIIRI)

THE ORGANISATION

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is the fourth public
university established by the Government of Malawi in December, 2012. It was
officially opened on 24th October, 2014. The University is situated in the
southern part of Malawi in the beautiful highlands of Thyolo District about 27
kilometres east of Blantyre City. It has four schools, namely Malawi Institute
of Technology (MIT); Ndata School of Climate and Earth Sciences (NSCES);
Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS); and Bingu School of Culture and Heritage
(BISCH). Through these schools, MUST is offering undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes in various disciplines.

MUST now invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced
candidates to fill the position of Director for MIIRI tenable at its Ndata
campus in Thyolo.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the Director for MIIRI shall oversee
research and development of innovation for industrial transformation at the
Institute. In addition, he/she shall provide leadership and oversight in
innovation and industrial research design, planning, implementation,
monitoring and evaluation. The Director will also be responsible for teaching
and supervision of students at MUST and other University Partners and the
supervision of the field Teams in all research field locations.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Among others, the Director for MIIRI will carry out the following duties and
responsibilities

> Preparing Terms of Reference and calls for proposals for the collaborative research in the field of innovation, STEM, industrial development and transformation
> In line with the MUST, MIIRI and Government of Malawi priorities and needs, develop and review a priority list of proposal areas and topics, particularly around agro-industrial innovation including but not limited to the following agro-value chains solutions and innovations; 4th industrial revolution; ICT4D industrial product development; industrial policy; innovative industrial financing models
> Developing project proposals with Schools, Department or unit managers, finance and relevant support functions and ensure stakeholders participation prior to submission to donors
> Designing training programs and identifying industry coaches to advance community, industry and University innovations
> Attending coordination meetings with government in respective partner ministries; public and private sector partners; stakeholders and other collaborators whenever it is necessary
> Compiling monthly consolidated research reports or updates for Executive Management, Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor
> Participating in Executive Management meetings to contribute to the overall success of the Institute and the University
> Presenting reports at various forums such as research symposia, conferences, workshops both locally and internationally ensuring the visibility of the Institute and the University
> Publishing articles in various scientific outlets such as conference proceedings, journals, books and\/or book chapters
> Ensuring that all research staff are trained in research partnership building, collaboration and coordination
> Ensuring that all research staff focus on strengthening relationship with the stakeholders in the research value chain
> Attending coordination meetings with government in respective partner ministries; public and private sector partners; stakeholders and other collaborators whenever necessary
> Performing any other duties as assigned or delegated by the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor from time to time

EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

> PhD in Science, Technology, Innovation, and Development or any industrial related field
> Associate Professor or full Professor
> At least 10 years’ experience working in innovation and research environment in the field within Malawi and beyond
> Track record of setting up a University based technology and innovation ecosystem and management functions
> Track record of securing, successfully managing and reporting on significant grants from donors
> Proven ability for networking with major players in government, higher education institutions and across the private sector
> Proven record and ability in working at both strategic, operational research and implementation of field level research
> Proven experience of preparing scope of work, work plans and managing budgets
> Proven experience in supervising research, performed by students, faculty and\/or collaborating partners
> Good attention to detail and methodical approach to work and looking into critical issues, making decision to solve problems in most efficient and effective manner
> Understanding of the donor compliance needs for a variety of donors, government and corporations
> Proven experience of preparing project proposal, conducting and leading research and managing staff and reporting to donors and stakeholders
> Confidence and ability to represent MUST and MIIRI, when delegated externally including public speaking as necessary
> An enterprising, creative, goal-orientated and can-do-attitude

> Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to influence across the organization and externally
> Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
> Familiarity with relevant government policies related to parastatals
> Diplomacy and tact
> Familiarity with globalisation and internationalization
> Evidence of being a continuous learner in an ever changing higher education environment
> Awareness of the move among Universities towards acquiring an entrepreneurial thrust
> Appreciation of current trends in higher education
> Be a team player and ready to collaborate with others in a positive manner
