Partners In Health
Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston,
Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the
poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and
research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those
most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in
Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia,
Kazakhstan and Boston.
PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of
Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers
and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations, Abwenzi Pa Za
Umoyo (APZU) is in Neno District.
PEDIATRIC DEVELOPMENT CLINIC (PDC)
Program Overview
In 2021, APZU will be supporting the MOH in Neno District to launch district
hospital-level pediatric development clinic (PDC) to provide care, treatment,
preventative and developmental care for pediatric patients with prematurity,
neonatal illness or complications, or infants/children with development delay
or feeding difficulties. Additionally, the clinic will service pediatric
patients with complex chronic conditions (e.g. congenital heart disease,
genetic or chromosomal conditions sickle cell, etc) in collaboration with the
Advanced Non-communicable disease (NCD) Clinic present at the district
hospital.
The PDC will be staffed with a clinical team especially trained in the
management of these conditions. This team will be responsible for the routine
operations and clinical care in this clinic as well as for mentorship and
support to neonatal and pediatric care at the primary care level in Neno’s 14
health facilities.
We seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidate for the
following position

Commitment Full Time (Monday-Friday)
Working Hours Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/Week)
Location Neno District, Malawi
Position Description Overview
The PD Nurse will provide comprehensive nursing care in the pediatric
development clinic (PDC) that will manage pediatric patients at high risk or
with developmental delay, history of prematurity or neonatal illness,
neurodevelopmental disorders and chronic disease. He/She will receive
specialised longitudinal training and mentorship and work with a
multidisciplinary team and should be willing to learn from nurses, clinical
officers, physicians, and other health workers working in Neno. The PD Nurse
will be a core member of the team responsible for the day-to-day operations
and clinical care at the PDC, in addition to being a mentor for quality of
care for neonatal and pediatric patients seen at the primary care level and
for inpatient care in Neno. He/She will collaborate closely with the MOH and
the clinical, community, and M&E teams in Neno to ensure effective
communication and quality programming for pediatric patients.
Responsibilities and Duties
> Provide direct specialized clinical nursing care including screening, collecting routine laboratory investigations, conducting other specialised tests in the clinic and monitoring of patient outcomes. The nurse will be required to keep detailed information on the care given and keep records of all patients managed in the clinic.
> Work hand-in-hand with MOH staff to provide nursing care and implement neonatal and pediatric programming.
> Provide support, counseling and education all patients and guardians that are newly enrolled or existing patients including parent/guardian development classes, peer support workshops, developmental assessments good adherence to drugs, feeding regimens and developmental play and reduce loss of follow up of the clients.
> Provide comprehensive health education and mentorship to support staff that works in the clinic.
> Provide education and mentorship to nurses around pediatric and neonatal care, specifically in primary care and the inpatient setting.
> Conduct inpatient hospital rounds to identify admitted neonatal and pediatric patients that would benefit from enrollment in the PDC.
> Work with default tracking team, Community Health Worker team and Program on Social and Economic Rights (POSER) teams to address social economic needs and ensure patients that are lost to follow up are followed in the community.
> Work in the other clinics whenever necessary, and occasionally inpatient care when needed.
> Any other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
> Registered nursing and midwifery, minimum diploma.
> Minimum experience of 3 years.
> Active registration with the Nursing Council of Malawi.
> Fluent in Chichewa and English and should be proficiency in writing in English.
> A strong interest in clinical nursing, patient/guardian education and mentorship, and for delivering compassionate care to patients with commitment to social justice.
> Experience in quality or systems improvement is desired.
> Oral and written communication skills in Chichewa and English
> Willingness to work overtimes when needed without compensation.
> Willingness and capability to work under stress and to execute specific tasks with short notice.
> Ability to work well with culturally diverse team and exhibit, high diplomacy and interpersonal skills while living and working in a rural, hard-to-reach area.
