ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston,
Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the
poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and
research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those
most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in
Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia,
Kazakhstan and Boston.
PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of
Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers
and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations, Abwenzi Pa Za
Umoyo (APZU) is in Neno District.
PEDIATRIC DEVELOPMENT CLINIC (PDC)
Program Overview
In 2021, APZU will be supporting the MOH in Neno District to launch district
hospital-level pediatric development clinic (PDC) to provide care, treatment,
preventative and developmental care for pediatric patients with prematurity,
neonatal illness or complications, or infants/children with development delay
or feeding difficulties. Additionally, the clinic will service pediatric
patients with complex chronic conditions (e.g. congenital heart disease,
genetic or chromosomal conditions sickle cell, etc) in collaboration with the
Advanced Non-communicable disease (NCD) Clinic present at the district
hospital.
The PDC will be staffed with a clinical team especially trained in the
management of these conditions. This team will be responsible for the routine
operations and clinical care in this clinic as well as for mentorship and
support to neonatal and pediatric care at the primary care level in Neno’s 14
health facilities.
We seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidate for the
following position

Working Hours Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/Week)
Location Neno District, Malawi
Position Description Overview
The PD Nurse Mentor will be a core part of the operations, clinical care,
teaching, and research at the pediatric development clinic and will help
oversee clinical operations including coordinating patient recruitment,
linkage to care, provide longitudinal patient care including developmental and
parent support and identify patients who need closer monitoring. The PD nurse
mentor and team will be responsible for providing broad infant and pediatric
development and chronic disease mentorship and collaboration it the primary
integrated chronic disease program, inpatient care, primary health facilities
and in the community. The PD Nurse Mentor will work closely with the Advanced
NCD, Integrated Chronic Care Clinic (IC3), special care nursery and community
programs team to integrate and provide holistic care to the patients in the
district. Additionally, the candidate will work with the Neno, national and
Partners In Health leadership to develop clinical protocols, referral pathways
along the care continuum and research projects surrounding pediatric chronic
disease and development. The candidate for this position must be self-
motivated, have superb interpersonal skills, be passionate about nursing care
and social justice, and show creativity in tackling clinical and
organizational problems as they arise.
Responsibilities and Duties
> Lead the pediatric development clinic in clinical operations including direct clinical care, education and patient/guardian support and monitoring of patient outcomes.
> Support design and implementation of identification, care, referral and treatment protocols for prematurity, development delay (including motor, speech, feeding), and complex chronic conditions including, but not limited to congential heart disease, neurodevelopmental disease, sickle cell disease, epilepsy, secondary chronic encepathopathy.
> Lead improvement and expansion of diagnostic, treatment and referral pathways within and outside Neno district.
> Technical review and support for national and international standards and development of new clinical guidelines as required.
> Work closely with the MR,F and clinical leadership in data systems for neonatal and pediatric PDC.
> Support coordination with other neonatal and pediatric APZU programs, especially maternity and neonatal health, IC3, malnutrition (CMAM, NRU), palliative care, and community screening, linkage and referral programs.
> Teaching and training in key pediatric skills for nurses across primary care, hospital clinics, and inpatient care.
> Supporting the inpatient nursing care of pediatric patients, especially in labor and delivery, special care nursery, pediatric ward and nutrition rehabilitation unit (NRU).
> Work directly with MOH leadership and APZU clinical leadership in Neno District to strengthen all aspects of neonatal and pediatric care.
> Supervision and mentorship of PDC Nurse at the PDC clinic.
> Collaborate and communicate closely with other nursing leadership at APZU and the MOH to coordinate programs and provide technical expertise in nursing management and service delivery.
> Working closely with the clinical leadership and national teams on developing clinical programs, policy statements, and research projects.
> Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
> Bachelor of nursing and midwifery, or equivalent.
> Additional training or master’s degree in neonatal/pediatric medicine, public health, nurse education, leadership, or management preferred.
> Minimum experience of +3-5 years.
> Active registration with the Nursing Council of Malawi.
> A strong interest in clinical nursing, patient/guardian education and mentorship, and for delivering compassionate care to patients with commitment to social justice.
> Experience in quality or systems improvement is desired.
> Oral and written communication skills in Chichewa and English.
> Excellent analytical skills; mature judgment combined with a proactive, energetic approach to problem solving; and confidentiality with minimum supervision and flexibility.
> Computer literate with strong internet skills with proficiency in Microsoft office – Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
> Ability to work well with culturally diverse team and exhibit high diplomacy and interpersonal skills while living and working in a rural, hard-to-reach area.
