Position: Business/Economics Expert

Location: Lilongwe, with missions within Malawi

Duration of project: 720 days (indicative end date: July 2022)

Number of working days: 55

Starting date: August 2020 (indicative)

Project: Technical Assistance to Support Malawi in Enhancement of Competition
and Consumer Protection Regulation

The project seeks to promote efficient functioning of markets in Malawi, and
ensure consumer protection from unfair trading practices by enhancing the
Competition and Fair-Trading Commission’s legal and technical capacity.

The Legal Expert will be responsible for, among other, the following tasks:

> Conduct market studies in various sectors of the economy.
> Recommend policy frameworks aimed at enhancing competition and consumer protection
> Organise and facilitate consultative and validation meetings with stakeholders
> Conduct training and capacity-building sessions

Qualifications and skills:

> Master Degree in Economics, Development Studies, Business Studies, Competition Economics/law or any relevant field; in its absence, equivalent relevant professional experience of 5 years;
> Fluency in both spoken and written English;
> Excellent communication skills and proven ability to engage and communicate with a variety of audiences.

General professional experience:

> At least 5 years’ experience in the sector(s) related to the lot
> Previous relevant experience in SADC and/or the COMESA region

Specific professional experience:

> At least 5 years of experience in conducting economic and market analysis, and market data interpretation
> At least 2 years of experience in facilitating, developing and implementing capacity building and training activities
> Proven knowledge and experience of competition and consumer protection statutes;
> Demonstrable experience in writing concise analytical reports of publishable quality;
> Knowledge and/or experience in competition law/policy will be an added advantage.
