The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a not-for-profit
institution that generates agricultural innovations to meet Africa’s most
pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource
degradation.
Working with various partners across sub-Saharan Africa, we improve
livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and
preserve natural resource integrity. IITA is member of the consortium
implementing the “Root and Tubers for Agricultural Transformation project “in
Malawi, funded by Irish Aid Malawi. The project aims to increase productivity,
climate resilience, nutritional
and quality of cassava, potato and sweet potato production systems. IITA is
leading the cassava component.
Value Chain Specialist
Duration 10 months
Duty Station Lilongwe, Chitedze Research Station
IITA is looking for a value chain expert (consultant) for the project “Root
and Tuber Crops for Agricultural Transformation (RTC-Action)– Cassava
component
The major responsibilities of the Consultant include the following
• Conduct a rapid appraisal of the distribution of planting materials
disseminated by the project
• Strengthen SMEs processing cassava which have been already identified (e.g.
Katunga Cooperative in Chitsime EPA requested support to develop a business
plan; Mambo Club in Mangochi and Tiphunzire farmers Club requested support to
be registered as a cooperative.)
• Promote cassava-based livestock feed with private sector (Data collection on
Milk Bulking group need to be followed in collaboration with DARS.
• Facilitate the linkage of cassava seed producers to cassava farmers and
cassava farmers to both fresh produce markets and processors.
• Liaise with project partner organizations to implement some marketing
activities.
• Continue to identify potential agri-businesses interested to collaborate
with the project with possible contractual arrangements.
• As part of the team implementing the project, participate in sensitization
and training workshops as well as project review and planning meetings.
• Compile data on the indicators of the project as per the work plan
• Prepare consolidated technical progress reports to be forwarded to the
project coordinator
• Any other duties assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
The Consultant will report directly to the Project Cassava Component
Coordinator and will be backstopped by Agricultural Economists at IITA-Malawi.
Required Qualifications
• MSc in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, or related fields.
• Experience in private sector development, business planning, or value chain
and market development.
