JOB DESCRIPTION
The Malawian Health Sector continues to experience severe lack of adequately
trained health care workers. Human Resources for Health (HRH) issues are
further compounded by the high burden disease within Malawi, most notably
HIV/AIDS. Malawi was the first country to adopt the ambitious UNAIDS 90-90-90
test and treat targets to fight HIV/AIDS. However, the achievement of this
goal has HRH implications, as it requires more health workers to ensure HIV
testing, linkage and retention to treatment, and other related services. For
Malawi to achieve the goals and targets, its HRH capacity must improve,
ensuring a workforce that is adequate and well-motivated to work.

The Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) with support from PEPFAR
through CDC intends to recruit Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) who will
be posted in selected PEPFAR supported priority sites in Zomba, Lilongwe and
Blantyre to support care and treatment. Successful candidates will be on a one
yearly contract, renewable based on availability funding. The successful
candidates will be expected to support retention of clients to care. CHAM
therefore invites applications for the following position: –

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1\. PRE-ENROLLMENT SUPPORT

Health education for demand creation for HTS; index testing and HIV self-
testing
Treatment education to newly diagnosed clients
Active linkage of newly diagnosed PLHIV to expert clients for close monitoring
Post- test support and education for HIV positive clients
Pre-enrollment tracing for those who didn’t opt for test and start

2.PATIENT APPOINTMENTS

Confirm ART master cards are updated and appointment dates tally with the
diary
Ensure appointment diary is up to date
Compile daily summary of patient attendance
Update client locator details e.g. nearest landmark
Ensure registers have adequate information for all newly diagnosed clients
e.g. phone numbers
Defaulter tracing and management
Compile daily 14 missed appointments and complete the defaulter tracing
register
Submit a list of missed appointments to the clinic in-charge for physical
tracing through expert clients
Follow up on all clients who did not turn up after the several attempts of
tracing them
Compile reasons why clients are defaulting

4\. ADHERENCE COUNSELLING

Conduct Psychosocial assessment
Provide Health education on treatment
Provide adherence counselling
Provide intensive adherence counselling to clients with high viral load
Conduct booster adherence sessions for patients with suppressed viral load
Actively trace ART clients who have not been notified of their high VL
Generate lists of ART clients who have not been notified of their high VL
results
Produce monthly reports and submit to the psycho-social councilor
support Group management

Ensure active linkage and referral of PLHIV identified at the clinic to
respective support groups.
Provide supportive supervision of expert clients at the facility under their
jurisdiction.
Facilitate linkage and referral clients to chosen peer support groups in the
community for continuous psychosocial and treatment adherence support
Promote ART adherence among support group members through periodic meetings
and assessments
Conduct education sessions with PLHIV support group members on various topics
including; HIV/AIDS basics, ARV adherence, Condom use, Disclosure of one’s HIV
status, family planning, hygiene and sanitation, nutrition, prevention of
Mother-to-Child transmission of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, stigma
and discrimination and other positive living strategies
Triaging and screening or clients for COVID, TB symptoms and HTS eligibility.

REMUNERATION

Salaries and benefits are within the Government Salary Scale.
