The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCM-CFM) is a
not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi government
in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of
children with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high
impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training
of health professionals and clinical research. We are situated within the
Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.

BCM-CFM invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the
following position of

Medical Director (Centre of Excellence)

The Medical Director oversees clinical program objectives, productivity
benchmarks and clinical outcomes while fostering a culture of teamwork,
integration, collaboration, open communication, and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions and Duties

> Responsible for medical supervision and overall regulation of all medical facets at the Center of Excellence (COE)
> Supervise heads of clinical departments (clinicians, nursing, community health, pharmacy, nutrition, adolescent health, psychosocial support, social work, laboratory services, HIV testing and counseling services) to maintain high quality-of-care services and introduce new areas of clinical care
> Provide direct clinical care and medical services to infants, children, adolescents, and adults regarding prevention, care and treatment of HIV, TB, and related conditions
> Support daily patient care responsibilities (e.g. answer questions about clinical management, consult on complicated cases, advise on clinic flow, etc.)
> Ensure quality of care and patient safety through monthly monitoring and evaluation of key performance indicators and annual patient satisfaction survey
> Foster a work environment that is conducive to the professional well-being of staff
> Conduct semi-annual written evaluations and provide contract renewals recommendations for clinical heads of department
> Direct the recruitment and selection of clinical staff
> Review and approve leave requests from direct reports
> Participate as member of Baylor Malawi Senior Management Team
> Create and lead working groups and leadership committees designed to improve patient care and enhance relationships with affiliated institutions
> Identify areas for quality improvement both for individual clinicians and for the COE and lead a Quality Improvement Management Team
> Foster collaboration between the COE and service lines as well as affiliated institutions (e.g. Kamuzu Central Hospital, Ministry of Health); and across Baylor-Malawi service lines
> Work directly with funders to design, implement, evaluate, and report programs
> Seek and write grant proposals
> Develop, update and improve the existing medical policies, medical protocols, and medical procedures in consultation with the Executive Director
> Write relevant components of the Annual report, including clinical and programmatic work
> Maintain proper record keeping of all activities at COE with regard to patient care, national statistics and research activities
> Maintain a program for continuing professional development such as Journal Club and weekly Clinician meetings including morbidity and mortality and case presentations
> Participate in BIPAI Network-wide Clinical Lead Forum
> Engage in scientific research projects and publications
> Recruit, orient, train and support Global Health Corps (GHC) physicians
> Provide orientation, direct clinical oversight, mentoring, and evaluation to trainees including Baylor College of Medicine Global Health resident physicians and short-term learners.
> Update training curricula for clinical staff and visitors
> Represent Baylor-Malawi on Ministry of Health technical working groups, national leadership and other interagency forae (i.e. national guideline development)
> Act as point of contact with Department of HIV/AIDS to ensure program activities align with Malawi National Strategic Plan; foster maintenance of positive relationships with ministry and other stakeholders
> Perform other duties that are assigned by the administration
> Provide direct clinical care 50% of time and administrative work 50% of time

The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of
work being performed, and other duties as they arise shall be included in
responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications*>

> Medical officer with training in pediatrics with at least 5 years of experience in HIV care
> Previous experience in supervisory or management roles
> Excellent verbal and written communication skills
> Grants management experience

Skills

> Expert-level knowledge of medical/clinical decision making and pharmacology and HIV care.
> Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise providers.
> Knowledge of holistic, patient centered care
> Excellent consultation skills, including the ability to consult on complex medical patients to colleagues of various medical disciplines.
> Openness to change and willing to lead change within the organization.
> Excellent communication skills.
> Grant management experience
> Ability to display non-judgmental attitude.
> Broad thinker, thinking globally and applying locally in order to improve medical practices even when some tools are not always available.
> Exemplary behavior; should cultivate and promote the spirit of trust and professionalism in the institution.
> Respect, fairness, integrity, responsibility, mindfulness, and professionalism are essential values
