Background

Sustainable Development Initiative (SDI), formerly known as Sustainable Rural
Growth and Development Initiative (SRGDI) is nonprofit making, local
nongovernmental organization formed in 2006 and registered with the
Government of Malawi , the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in
Malawi (CONGOMA) and the Non-Government Organizations (NGO) Board of Malawi.
SDI focuses on the most vulnerable and together with communities tries to find
sustainable/long lasting solutions to poverty, disasters, environmental
degradation and social injustices. Since 2006, SDI has contributed towards
improvement of lives and livelihoods of over 500,000 households (Approximately
2.5million people) in Malawi.

Communication & Media in SDI – Communications is a key component of SDI and
constitutes a vehicle for ensuring visibility for successful SDI initiatives,
results and programmes as well as for raising awareness about key issues of
sustainable development. Effective communications also contribute to
mobilizing resources as donors would like to see value for money. New digital
media have brought about dramatic changes in the ways people consume
information and interact. Not only have digital communication channels changed
how people access and share information, they have also generated new content
formats. Audiences are in particular drawn to the appeal of visual and
interactive presentation. SDI intends to expand into this area with the aim of
telling impactful human-interest stories to large audiences using new digital
formats. Under the direct supervision and guidance the Monitoring, Evaluation
and Learning Officer, the intern will assist the Communications section in
various digital and social media communications and website activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Monitoring ,Evaluation and Learning Officer , the
intern will

• Support the development of communications tools such as brochures,
newsletters, documentaries infographics, fact-sheets, multi-media assets etc

• Support the daily management of SDI media accounts (Twitter, Facebook,
Youtube and Flickr)

• Writing engaging posts and ensuring regular updates on social media and
support with production of other content for social media

• Personal communications with fans and followers

• Keeping up to date on new social media tools, best practice and how other
organizations and companies are using them in order to identify new
campaigning opportunities,

• Analysing social media analytics together with the communications team to
support the expansion of SDI’s reach over social media

• Support SDI library services

• Support research on specific themes relating to SDI’s mandate;

• Contribute and ensure the visibility of events, campaigns and key activities
planned by SDI (drafting articles, podcasts, photos, etc.).

• Support with the production of multimedia content

• Perform other duties as directed by supervisor

Learning Objectives

• By the end of the internship the intern should have a good working knowledge
of the communications functions of SDI as well as digital and social media;

• The intern should leave with an improved understanding of Sustainable
Development and how SDI is working to improve the quality of lives and
livelihoods of the people in Malawi and Southern Africa

• The intern should have diverse knowledge and experience producing reports
and knowledge products in development work

• Good knowledge of online platforms, and social media outlets including
online tools

• Good knowledge of Microsoft tools (MS Word, Publisher Excel, PowerPoint)

• Knowledge and understanding of sustainable development goals

• Knowledge on online campaigns and/or marketing strategies

• Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design and other graphic
design production tools is an asset

Required Skills and Experience

Education

This should be considered a mid-level position

• The intern must have studies in communications, public relations, journalism
or other similar subject at the university/college level.

• Diploma is the minimum required qualification

Language

Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;

Interns are not financially remunerated by SDI.
