Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston,
Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the
poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and
research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those
most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in
Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia,
Kazakhstan, and Boston.

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of
Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers
and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations.

Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) is in Neno District and we seek to recruit suitably
qualified and experienced candidates for this position

Position Psychosocial Counsellor, Depression Care Trial (IC3D) (5 Positions)
Reports to Mental Health Clinical Officer
Commitment Full Time (Monday-Friday)
Working Hours Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/Week)
Location Neno District, Malawi

Position Overview*>
IC3D is a model of depression care being implemented throughout Neno
District’s Integrated Chronic Care Clinics (IC3) over the next 3 years.
Psychosocial Counsellors will provide Problem Management Plus (PM+), a
psychosocial intervention for adults with depression, beginning in the Summer
of 2021. Psychosocial Counsellors will be part of a clinical trial evaluating
the benefits of PM+, and will also be responsible for administering surveys to
assess patients’ health and psychosocial wellbeing.

They will work directly with Partners In Health/APZU staff (executives,
clinicians, program team members, monitoring and evaluation) to successfully
implement PM+ throughout Neno District to help improve the lives of patients
with depression.

Responsibilities and Duties

50% Psychosocial Counselling

> Administer group-based Problem Management Plus (PM+) for adults with depression at facilities throughout Neno District.
> Prepare for PM+ sessions by reviewing PM+ protocols, gathering materials and food prior to PM+ sessions.
> Record clinical notes after each PM+ session, including activities and topics covered, follow up points for the next session, referrals provided, and any relevant information on engagement of participants.
> Ensure that ethical standards and practices are observed at all times.

25% Survey Administration

> Administer standardized clinical surveys, such as the PHQ-9, to identify patients’ depression symptoms, severity of symptoms, psychosocial wellbeing, and other medical and demographic information.
> Screen prospective participants for eligibility in PM+ by administering the PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 on an electronic tablet.
> Diagnose prospective participants with mild, moderate, or severe depression based on a battery of screening tools including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview.

25% General Project Administration

> Contact PM+ participants to remind them about upcoming appointments, and to inquire about those who missed
appointments.

> Organize and file clinical notes and completed surveys.
> Meet with Mental Health Clinical Officer and other team members on a routine basis to discuss progress on administration of PM+.
> Travel to/from sites where PM+ is being administered, Monday – Friday.
> Any other clinical or administrative duties that may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Attributes

> Diploma in Psychosocial Counselling or equivalent; specific clinical knowledge on forms of behavioral therapy to provide care for individuals with conditions such as depression
> Comfortability with clinical assessment tools such as the PHQ-9
> Willingness to be based in Neno near APZU headquarters and travel Monday through Friday to health facilities in Neno District
> Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage complex projects from creation to completion, plan and prioritize, and coordinate teams to meet deadlines
> Excellent attention to detail in all work
> Excellent communication and writing skills and ability
> Excellent analytical skills, including proficiency in MS Excel, as well as experience working with mobile health platforms such as CommCare or ODK.
