Sustainable Development Initiative (SDI) is committed to achieving workforce

Background
Sustainable Development Initiative (SDI), formerly known as Sustainable Rural
Growth and Development Initiative (SRGDI) is nonprofit making, local
nongovernmental organization formed in 2006 and registered with the
Government of Malawi , the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in
Malawi (CONGOMA) and the Non-Government Organizations (NGO) Board of Malawi.
SDI focuses on the most vulnerable and together with communities tries to find
sustainable/long lasting solutions to poverty, disasters, environmental
degradation and social injustices. Since 2006, SDI has contributed towards
improvement of lives and livelihoods of over 500,000 households (Approximately
2.5million people) in Malawi.
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) & Climate Change (CC) in SDI – SDI is committed
to enhancing the resilience of people to economic and environmental shocks
that affect their lives and livelihoods. Under this focal area SDI directly
contributes to the National Resilience Strategy (NRS), which has a goal of a
country free of chronic vulnerability and food and nutrition insecurity, where
sustainable economic growth creates opportunities for everyone, and where
people are resilient to economic and environmental shocks that affect their
lives and livelihoods. This also contributes towards SDG Goal number 13; “Take
urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts” and SDG Goal number
11;”Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and
sustainable.”
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Programme Officer , the intern will
• Support hazard, vulnerability, capacity and risk assessments and contingency
planning
• Support DRR and CC awareness , education and advocacy
• Support popularising Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking as an
alternative to firewood and charcoal
• Assist in the promotion of climate and disaster risk finance and insurance
and Climate-Smart Agriculture
• Assist in the planning and implementation of humanitarian assistance to
families affected by disasters
• Assist in the organisation of training, research and consultancy services in
DRR & CC
• Support in the development and running of a DRM information Portal/Hub
• Perform other duties as directed by supervisor
Learning Objectives
• By the end of the internship the intern should have a good working knowledge
of the disaster risk reduction and climate change functions of SDI
• The intern should leave with an improved understanding of Sustainable
Development and how SDI is working to improve the quality of lives and
livelihoods of the people in Malawi and Southern Africa
• The intern should have diverse knowledge and experience in Disaster Risk
Reduction, Climate Change and building community resilience to shocks.

Required Skills and Experience
Education
This should be considered a mid-level position
• The intern must have studies in Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change,
Environmental Science or other similar subject at the university level.
• Have graduated with a university degree
Language Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are
required;
Interns are not financially remunerated by SDI.
