Job Description

The responsibility of the Materials Development Coordinator is to support the
materials development activities of the project. Teaching and learning
materials will include print materials (workbooks, textbooks, teacher guides
and others as identified from time to time) and instructional video materials.

Primary Responsibilities

> Work closely with the TL, DTL, the OU materials development team to prepare detailed work plans for the process of materials development.
> Coordinate with the MoE on the arrangements for the materials development activities.
> To be the liaison between the project and the members of the Core Team engaged in the materials development activities.
> Provide support to the TL, DTL and the OU materials development team with preparations for the materials development activities,
> Coordinate the logistics associated with the workshops, meetings and other activities related to materials development, including (but not limited to) ensuring that resources are available for workshops, coordinating the permission letters etc. from the MoE for participants to attend circulating these timeously to the participants.
> Monitor activity progress in terms of the materials development work plan, identify concerns for discussion with the SMT and help resolve bottlenecks.
> Coordinate the submission of materials for approval by the relevant MoE departments to secure timely approvals.
> Coordinate with the project printing partner to ensure that materials are submitted on time for printing and the materials delivered to schools as per the work plan.

Candidate Specification

> A graduate qualification in education or a relevant subject.
> Proven coordination/management experience in an education programme(s) at a senior level.
> Sound understanding of MoE processes for the design and development of instructional materials for schools in Malawi (or a proven ability to learn about and understand processes quickly).
> Fluency in spoken and written English and Chichewa.
> Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships with the MoE, partners, peers, and stakeholders.
> Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel and confidence in using communications tools (email and digital calendars) to help manage and coordinate activities.

Strengthening the Teaching of Primary School Mathematics in Malawi is a 3-year
programme that aims to improve student learning outcomes in mathematics, so
girls and boys have a solid foundation in basic skills to succeed in the rest
of their schooling and fulfil their potential. The programme will provide
technical assistance to facilitate the revision of the mathematics curriculum
for lower primary (standards 1-4), develop corresponding teaching and learning
materials, design teacher training strategies (including school-based support
structures), rigorously pilot the new materials and training strategies,
document impact, refine the materials and training strategies, and then
oversee the national scale-up. The Programme will operate from the Malawi
Institute of Education (MIE), based in Zomba during its pilot phase, and
thereafter will be coordinated from the Ministry of Education, Science and
Technology in Lilongwe.
