Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine

Based in Malawi, the Laboratory Research Support Unit (LRSU) is recruiting for
an experienced Lead Laboratory Microbiologist.*> The successful candidate
will be an integral part of a vibrant laboratory, taking a primary role in
supporting training, ensuring quality in both diagnostic and research
microbiology laboratory capacity at MLW.

Purpose of the Role

MLW conducts excellent research to benefit health and train the next
generation of researchers. This busy organisation is situated in Blantyre,
Malawi, a country with a significant burden of infectious diseases, and
therefore microbiology, immunology and related disciplines underpin much of
what they do.

The Role

This role will be key to ensuring that the output of both core and project
science assays are of the highest quality and to international standards; we
have attained ISO15189 accreditation for a number of our key diagnostic tests
and will be working to retain and expand the scope of the accreditation.

Key responsibilities are but not limited to

> Liaise closely with molecular biology teams already in place, as well as Principal Investigators who are managing their own lab work.
> Drive the development and expansion of clinical microbiology in MLW primarily by increased collaboration with clinical partners at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
> Support the development of new research projects that require high quality microbiology, thus supporting the Research Group Heads (currently 16 research groups).
> Improve quality, catalyse new work, and take a leading technical support role in the research projects.
> Be a key part of the LRSU management structure, particularly the Lab Steering Committee
> Develop collaborative and strong working relationships with all relevant stakeholders and other departments within and outside MLW.
> Develop, manage a team of up to 12 people.
> Take responsibility for, and work with, Core LRSU staff and Principal Investigators to develop, implement and conduct quality control and assurance processes.

The Candidate

Ideally you will be able to demonstrate the following

> Degree in Biomedical Science
> Relevant experience at a senior level in a high-quality diagnostic microbiology laboratory
> Demonstrable experience in administration and resource management, including writing SOPs and other procedural documents.
> Experience working in resource limited settings.
> Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills with the ability to work with staff at all levels both in Malawi and internationally.
> Demonstrable Experience with independent assay development and troubleshooting new techniques.

> Take up of the role is conditional on the Malawian Immigration authority granting the successful candidate the relevant employment permit.
