The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS)

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a Statutory Organization established
in 1972 by an Act of Parliament, with a mandate to promote standardization of
commodities and their manufacture, production processing or treatment and to
provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring
instruments; and further to provide for matters incidental to or connected
with standardization.

To beef up its operations, the Malawi Bureau of Standards seeks to recruit the
services of suitably qualified individuals to fill the following vacant posts
tenable at its Head Office in Blantyre.

Scientific Officer (Mechanical Engineering)

Grade BS6

Responsible to Senior Scientific Officer (Mechanical Engineering)

Responsible for Senior Laboratory Technician

No of Positions One

Duty Station Head Office

Job Purpose

To oversee daily operations of the Mechanical Laboratory Section.

Main Duties

a. Checking on test data and compilation of test reports in the laboratory;

b Supervising senior laboratory technicians;

c. Ensuring that reagents are correctly prepared and standardized at all
times;

d. Preparing progress reports and annual budgets for the sections;

e. Conducting relevant consultancies;

f. Checking and consolidating progress reports for the sections;

g. Developing Standard Operating Procedures;

h. Appraising performance of Senior Technicians;

i. Supervising the collection of samples;

j. Preparing reference materials; and

k. Assigning samples to Laboratory Technicians.

c. Have a strong managerial and organizational skills and demonstrate
capacity;

d. Should have the ability to plan and coordinate activities;

e. Strong analytical and problem solving skills;

f. Strong organizational skills;

g. Team player and ability to work independently;

h. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability to
interact effectively with others across all levels of the organization.

Qualifications and Experience Required

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Sciences or Engineering obtained
from obtained from a recognized institution with at least 2 years’ experience
working in a related field.
